Using Your HSA/FSA for Massage Therapy

HSA/FSA payments for Massage Therapy

Massage therapy isn’t just for relaxation—it can also be part of a medically necessary treatment plan. At Body Energy Center, we’re happy to let you know that we accept HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards as payment for your massage sessions.

If you’re managing migraines, back pain, swelling, autoimmune conditions, stress, or other health-related concerns, your massage may qualify as an eligible expense. To use your HSA or FSA, you’ll need documentation from a licensed healthcare provider.

What You Need: A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

To comply with IRS and plan guidelines, massage therapy must be considered medically necessary. That means you’ll need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) or Prescription from a doctor, physical therapist, chiropractor, or another qualified provider.

An LMN should include:

  • Diagnosis – The condition being treated (e.g., chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel, muscle injury).
  • Treatment Plan – How massage therapy will address your condition, with recommended frequency and duration.
  • Medical Purpose – Confirmation that massage is needed for treatment, not just general wellness or relaxation.

👉 Tip: Keep your LMN and your receipts in your records.

Massage can be more than stress relief—it can be part of your healthcare plan. Using your HSA or FSA allows you to support your long-term health while saving money.

Conditions That May Qualify

With a valid LMN, the following types of massage may be eligible:

  • Therapeutic massage for chronic pain or injury
  • Deep tissue massage for ongoing muscle tension
  • Manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema or swelling
  • Medical massage for a diagnosed condition
  • Prenatal massage for pregnancy-related discomfort

The treatment type matters less than the medical reason behind it.

How Payment Works

Most HSA/FSA cards work just like debit cards. Since Body Energy Center is set up with the correct merchant codes, you can pay directly with your HSA or FSA card at the time of your session.

If for any reason your card does not go through, don’t worry—it’s usually due to card processing codes, not your account balance. In that case, simply pay as usual, keep your receipt, and submit it for reimbursement with your LMN.

Getting Started

  1. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether massage therapy may benefit your condition.
  2. Request a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) or prescription.
  3. Book your session at Body Energy Center and pay with your HSA/FSA card.
  4. Save your LMN and receipts for your records.

At Body Energy Center, we’re committed to supporting your health goals with specialized therapeutic massage. If you’d like to learn more about using your HSA or FSA for sessions with us, reach out—we’re here to help.
